The end of the 14th Hijra was celebrated by the Muslim community all over the world. India being the second largest country in terms of muslim population, also took active part in the centenary celebrations. The Hijra Era Celebrations Committee, constituted under the Chairmanship of the then Vice Chairman Shri M. Hidayatullah, organized several functions including an International Seminar on “Islamic contribution to the Culture and Civilization of the world with special reference to India “ in January 1981. The Government of India also released a postal stamp on 3rd November, 1980 to commemorate the event.

It was during this Centenary celebrations that the idea to establish an India Islamic Cultural Centre in Delhi was conceived for promoting understanding amongst people of different religions helping the cause of National Integration. Soon a piece of land was allotted to IICC (a Society registered in April, 1981) at Lodhi Road, New Delhi for this purpose. The then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of this noble Institution on 24th August, 1984.

Karim’s, the famous food chain for authentic Mughlai cuisine is also there at the backside of the Centre. I’ve visited the place quite a few times with my family and friends and really enjoyed the food there (although I am a vegetarian). More than the food, I suppose, it’s the ambiance and the quality of service which makes it one of my favourite places to eat out.
