Mirza Ghalib Tomb, New Delhi

Tomb of the great 19^th century Urdu Poet Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (often referred to as Urdu Shakespeare and better known by his pet name Ghalib) is situated on a very congested and busy lane leading to the famous Nizamuddin Dargah. The Tomb is located adjacent to Chausanth Khamba (the Tomb of Emperor Akbar’s foster brother Mirza Aziz Koka) and the Urs Mahal.

Ghalib’s Saheb’s haveli, where he stayed for a considerable period of time having shifted from Agra, is situated in one of the densely populated areas of Delhi at Gali Qasim Jaan, Ballimaran. It is however said that he spent his final days here at Nizamuddin Basti area and thus, buried here.

Though I visit Nizamuddin Dargah quite often and was aware of the Ghalib Saheb’s mazar in the vicinity, I could only locate the place with the help of a local boy. I noticed that the security guard deployed at the site keeps the premises locked and opens it only on the request of the ‘genuine’ visitors apparently to keep the ‘unwanted’ elements to frequent the place.
